My tutoring philosophy

While math may seem quite regimented by nature and standardized tests, well, standardized, one size does not fit all when it comes to tutoring and learning styles! With regards to vocabulary, for example, some students feel comfortable with flash cards, some with learning words in context, and others with associating roots and similar words. In algebra, there is often more than one viable method to arrive at a problem's solution. A student who has a multifaceted toolbox to draw from will feel more comfortable and more confident during test time.
At the heart of any successful study plan is practice. The tutor-student relationship is a two-way commitment: I will develop the most appropriate strategies and assemble the best materials to help you learn what you need to know, and you in turn will commit to the study plan and complete the assigned exercises in preparation for our one-on-one sessions. Regular independent practice helps ensure that the skills and methods we review while working together will become internalized. How much time I expect a student to invest in homework drills and practice tests depends upon many things, including school workload, sports, work, and other extracurricular obligations. Together we'll determine the optimal attack strategy for you to achieve the score you need.
